This article examines what I have termed the Early Period of gramophone recording in Siam/Thailand – from 1903 to 1940 (see Mitchell 2016a: 444), with a view to making a direct comparison between the recording industry of Siam and those of Indonesia (Dutch East Indies or DEI), Malaysia (Malay) and Singapore (IMS).
